Sowers Action is a non-religious, non-political and non-profit-making charity established in Hong Kong since September 1992 (reg. IRD Ref:91/3859), with the objective to improve education in China. We firmly believe that education can help students get out of poverty and that transforming the burden of its huge population into intellectual resources is vital to China's continuous development.
“Miao” means "sprout" which stands for students, “Pu” means "nursery" which stands for schools, “Xin Dong” means "action" . We take concrete actions to help students from poor families to pursue and complete education. We finance re-building safe and proper school premises. We also facilitate teaching quality enhancement. We emphasize the working principles of "on-site assessment, direct sponsorship and long-term follow-up" to ensure that the donation is effectively utilized. Every year, we send over 60 working groups, comprised of volunteers, carrying out these visits at their own expenses in the poor regions. Through these visits, we aid to understand and collect first-hand information on the local economic and education situation, the conditions of the school buildings, and the progress of projects before making recommendation for education subsidy or for the approval by the local authorities concerned. In doing so, we ensure that the donation is effectively utilized.
Sowers Action is a volunteer-led charity organization. People engaged with us are from all walks of life; recognized our target and mission, supporting the organization in different ways and forms, which including our daily operation. Our administrative funds are raised independently, which in fact make us very unusual compare to others charity organization in Hong Kong. Every cent of the funds raised for education is spent on subsidizing education only.
By the end of March, 2010 Sowers Action has financed the construction over 1,100 school buildings and subsidized over 250,000 school places and subsidized 8,500 teachers to enhance their teaching skills, with cumulative funding nearly RMB 2.5 billion. Our well-known fund raising events include “Walk to Guangzhou”, “Long March For Education”, “Ancient Tea Horse Route” and “Challenging 12 Hours”.
